Job Summary:
The Veterinary Exotics Technician is responsible for providing specialized care and assistance in veterinary medicine, particularly in the area of exotic animals. This role involves working alongside veterinarians to ensure the highest standard of animal healthcare, handling, and treatment. The Veterinary Exotics Technician must possess a strong knowledge of exotic animal species and their specific needs, along with excellent technical skills to assist in diagnostic procedures, surgical interventions, and treatment plans.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide exceptional nursing care and support to exotic animals under the supervision of the veterinarian.
2. Assist veterinarians in conducting physical examinations, diagnostic tests, and surgical procedures on exotic animals.
3. Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.
4. Monitor and record vital signs, anesthesia, and recovery of exotic animals during procedures and surgeries.
5. Prepare and maintain accurate medical records, including patient history, treatments, and progress notes.
6. Handle and restrain exotic animals safely and securely during examinations and procedures.
7. Perform laboratory tests, including blood work, urinalysis, and fecal analysis, as required.
8. Operate and maintain veterinary equipment and instruments used in the care of exotic animals.
9. Educate pet owners on proper care, nutrition, and handling of exotic animals.
10. Assist in the triage, emergency stabilization, and initial treatment of exotic animal patients.
11. Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring compliance with safety and infection control protocols.
12. Participate in continuing education programs to enhance knowledge and keep abreast of advancements in veterinary medicine.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Degree or diploma in Veterinary Technology or a related field.
2. Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a Veterinary Technician, preferably with a focus on exotics.
3. Strong understanding of exotic animal species, their anatomy, physiology, and common medical conditions.
4. Proficient in handling, restraining, and caring for exotic animals, ensuring their safety and minimizing stress.
5. Excellent knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, pharmacology, and laboratory procedures.
6. Skilled in conducting physical examinations, administering medications, and assisting in surgeries.
7. Ability to operate and maintain veterinary equipment and instruments used in the treatment of exotic animals.
8. Exceptional organizational and multitasking abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
9. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with veterinarians, colleagues, and pet owners.
10. Strong empathy and compassion towards animals, with a commitment to ensuring their welfare.
11. Proficient computer skills, including the use of veterinary management software and digital medical records.
